One of the joys (& sometimes frustrations!) of outdoor photography is working with nature’s unpredictable canvas.
Sunny vs cloudy weather – is one better than the other? Both sunny and overcast skies offer incredible opportunities for beautiful photos – they just do it in different ways!
Sunny days create photos that are bright and glowy.
This is what most people envision when they think about perfect weather for a photoshoot. Sunlight brings warmth, vibrancy, and a sense of joy to your photos. It enhances colours, making them pop.
Whether it’s the blue of the ocean, the green of a park, or the pastel tones of your family’s outfits, sunny weather ensures those colours stand out beautifully.
Light and shadows on a sunny day can add depth and dimension to your photos. From kids playing under trees to sunlight streaming through leaves, these natural patterns create artistic, eye-catching effects.
Here’s some photos taken at the same location on sunny and overcast days.
Don’t let overcast skies dampen your excitement for a photoshoot!
Cloudy days bring a whole different kind of beauty that’s equally captivating. Clouds act like a giant soft box in the sky, diffusing sunlight and eliminating harsh shadows.
This creates soft, even lighting that’s incredibly flattering for portraits. Skin tones look smooth and natural, and no one’s squinting into the sun!
Cloudy weather often brings a sense of calm and intimacy to photos. These photos often feel more grounded and natural.
We can’t control the weather, but we can always adapt and find beauty in whatever the skies bring. Whether it’s the golden glow of a sunny day or the serene softness of a cloudy one, the weather enhances your photos in its own unique way.
At the end of the day, it’s not the location or weather that’s the most important part of your photos – it is YOU!
