What to wear for family photos: Why neutral colours aren’t your only option. If you’ve been searching for advice on what to wear for family photos, you’ve probably noticed one thing: a lot of family photo outfit ideas revolve around neutral colours. Beige, white, cream, tan and pastel tones seem to dominate Pinterest boards and social media feeds.
And while there’s absolutely nothing wrong with neutral colours if they’re your style, they’re not the only way to create beautiful, timeless family photographs.
As a family photographer, I believe the best family photo outfits are the ones that feel authentic to you. Your photos should reflect your family’s personality, not just the latest trend. If your wardrobe naturally includes colour, texture or patterns, there’s no reason to leave them behind on photo day.

There’s a reason neutral colours are often recommended for family photos. They photograph beautifully, don’t distract from the people in the image, and tend to coordinate easily across multiple family members. Neutral palettes can also create a soft, timeless look that many families love.
But somewhere along the way, “neutral colours work well” became “you must wear neutral colours.”
That’s simply not true.
A beautiful family photo is about connection, emotion and storytelling. Your clothing should support that, not dictate it.

Think about your family’s everyday life.
Maybe your daughter is obsessed with pink. Perhaps your son lives in his favourite blue shirt. Maybe you love wearing vibrant floral dresses, or your family gravitates towards rich greens and warm rust tones.
These details are part of your story.
Colour can add warmth, energy and personality to your family photos. It can help your images feel more personal and unique, rather than looking like they could belong to anyone.
Years from now, you’ll likely remember how your family was during this season of life far more than whether everyone wore beige.

When I say you don’t have to wear all neutrals for family photos, I don’t mean everyone should simply wear whatever happens to be hanging in their wardrobe.
The most beautiful family photo outfits still feel intentional.
Whether you’re incorporating colour or sticking to a more neutral palette, it’s worth spending a little time thinking about how everyone’s outfits work together. A well-coordinated colour palette helps create a cohesive look and allows the focus to remain on your family’s connection rather than on any one outfit.
For example, in the creek session featured throughout this blog, the family chose rich browns, earthy greens and warm tan tones. Each person wore something different, but the colours complemented one another beautifully. The result was a look that felt natural, timeless and true to their personalities, while also working harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.
Think of your family’s outfits as pieces of the same puzzle. Not identical, not perfectly matching, but connected. Mixing complementary colours, textures and tones creates visual interest while still feeling polished and intentional.
The goal isn’t for everyone to wear the same thing. It’s to create a palette that works beautifully together and elevates the overall look of your photographs.

The best family photos happen when everyone can relax, move and enjoy being together.
If you’re constantly adjusting a dress, worrying about stains on a white shirt, or trying to keep a toddler in an outfit they hate, it can affect the experience.
Choose clothing that feels comfortable and allows you to move freely. This is especially important because your session will involve walking, playing with your children, cuddles, tickles or exploring outdoors together.
Comfort leads to confidence, and confidence always photographs beautifully.

When it comes to what to wear for family photos, there are very few hard rules.
Neutral colours can look beautiful. So can blues, greens, pinks, florals, patterns and everything in between.
The most important thing is that your outfits feel like an authentic reflection of your family. When you feel comfortable, confident and genuinely yourselves, that’s what shines through in your photographs.
And those are the images you’ll treasure for years to come 🙂
If choosing outfits for your family photos feels overwhelming, you’re not alone. One of the things I help every family with is creating a colour palette that feels authentic to them, complements the location we’ve chosen, and photographs beautifully.
Whether you love soft neutrals, rich earthy tones, or a little more colour, I’ll guide you through the process so you can feel confident and excited about your session.
If you’re thinking about updating your family photos and would love a relaxed, natural experience that captures your family as they are right now, I’d love to hear from you.
