It’s one of the biggest concerns parents have before booking a photo session. “What if my kids won’t cooperate during family photos?”
“What if my toddler has a meltdown?”
“My son never sits still.”
“I’m worried they won’t smile nicely.”
If you’ve had those thoughts, you’re certainly not alone.
The good news? Children don’t need to “behave perfectly” for beautiful family photos. In fact, some of my favourite images happen when kids are simply being themselves.
Here are five things that can make a huge difference.

Not every family photographer works the same way, and that’s okay!
Some sessions are built around carefully posed portraits, while others (like mine) are designed to leave room for movement, play and genuine connection.
When children know they’re allowed to explore, cuddle, laugh, run, climb, play games and simply be themselves, the pressure disappears – for them and for you!
Of course, I still capture a handful of beautiful portraits where everyone is looking at the camera. Those photos matter too. But they aren’t the heart of your gallery. The heart of your gallery is the way your child wraps their arms around your leg, their cheeky grins, the way they reach for your hand or proudly show you a treasure they’ve found.
When choosing your photographer, ask yourself this question : Will my child be expected to perform, or will they be encouraged to simply be themselves?

Children love knowing what’s coming.
Rather than telling them they’re going to have photos taken, try describing the experience.
You could say something like “We’re going to go on an adventure together! We’ll have cuddles, play some games, explore, and there’ll be someone called a photographer with a camera taking pictures while we have fun.”
For younger children, I have a little e-storybook on my Client Lounge that families can read together before their session. It helps little ones understand what to expect in a fun, familiar way and can make the whole experience feel exciting instead of unfamiliar.
The goal isn’t to prepare them to “perform.” It’s simply to help them feel comfortable.

It sounds simple, but the basics really do matter!
A full tummy and some good rest can go a long way toward happy little people, so having a snack beforehand (and bringing a few easy snacks along) can be a lifesaver. Make sure also to take water bottles for everyone, and have a toilet break before you start the photo session.
If you can, keeping screen time to a minimum before your session can also help heaps. After lots of fast-paced visual stimulation, slowing down and engaging with the outdoors or with family can be a harder transition.
No child is perfectly regulated all the time, and that’s completely normal. But a little preparation can help everyone start the session feeling their best!

One of the biggest misconceptions about family photography is that children won’t last an hour.
Well yes, they usually won’t last more than 10 minutes if they’re expected to sit still and smile the whole time.
That’s why choosing a photographer who takes a relaxed approach can make such a difference.
I intentionally allow plenty of time during my sessions. We wander. We chat. We pause. We play. If someone needs a cuddle, a drink, a snack or a few quiet moments, that’s perfectly okay.
Most people, adults included, feel a little awkward at the beginning of a photo session. It takes time to relax, forget about the camera and simply enjoy being together.
That’s often why my favourite images happen towards the end of a session, once everyone has settled in and let their guard down.
Children also need space to process big emotions. If they’re feeling shy or grumpy, there’s no need to rush or force smiles. Giving them time to work through those feelings often leads to far more genuine moments than trying to control them.

One day, you’ll miss the things that feel ordinary right now.
The missing front teeth.
The way they collect sticks and leaves.
The muddy feet.
The way they can’t walk past a puddle without jumping in it.
Their curiosity.
Their imagination.
Their wonderfully unique personality.
Those are the moments that tell the story of this season of your family’s life.
Yes, we’ll capture a few timeless portraits where everyone is looking at the camera. Those images deserve a place on your wall too.
But years from now, I believe the photos where your children were simply allowed to be children, will be the ones tugging at your heart strings!
Because childhood isn’t neat or perfectly posed. It’s joyful, messy, adventurous, affectionate and wonderfully unpredictable.
And that’s exactly what makes it worth remembering.

If you’re worried your children won’t cooperate during family photos, I hope this reassures you:
They don’t have to.
They don’t need to perform, smile on command or sit perfectly still.
They just need to come ready to be themselves.
The rest? We’ll figure it out together 🙂

If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried your children won’t sit still or smile on cue, I’d love to show you that they don’t have to.
My relaxed, documentary-style sessions give your family space to connect, explore and simply enjoy being together. I’ll gently guide you when needed (yes, we’ll capture a few beautiful portraits looking at the camera!), but the heart of your gallery will be the real moments that make your family yours.
Whether you’re based in North Brisbane, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast or you’re happy to travel for a session, I’d love to help you preserve this season of life in a way that feels natural, joyful and true to your family.
